What is a Finnish bath? How it differs from the Turkish hammam

Alongside the Turkish hammam, Lilyum Spa Gümüşsuyu has a Finnish bath and sauna. We explain the difference between dry and humid heat and when to use each.

Same aim, different heat

Both the Turkish hammam and the Finnish bath relax the body by warming it, but in different ways. The Turkish hammam is humid and gently warm, built around marble and water. The Finnish bath works with dry, high heat in a wooden room.

What happens in a Finnish bath?

You sit on wooden benches and warm up in short rounds. Because the air is dry, you start to sweat quickly. Rounds are kept short, with time to cool down and drink water in between. If it is your first time, start with a few minutes and listen to how your body responds.

How is the Turkish hammam different?

In the Turkish hammam the heat is softer and water and marble are at the centre of the experience. Steps such as the kese scrub and foam massage are given by a therapist, so the hammam is not just a warm room but a guided ritual from start to finish.

In which order should you use them?

As a general suggestion, a short warm-up in dry heat, then the hammam ritual and a massage at the end is a good order. Ask our team when booking how the areas are used and which are included in your programme; we will plan the flow around your preference.

Who should take care?

High heat is not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant or have a blood pressure or heart condition, speak to your doctor before using the hot areas and let our team know. Avoiding a heavy meal beforehand and drinking plenty of water applies to both baths.
